Meet the Teachers of the 2012 Workshop at Goodwin School:
At the GVWP Writing & Technology Workshop at Goodwin School, the teachers, just as the students, learned a great deal!
During the two-week workshop, nineteen teachers studied books about teaching writing, discussed ideas for K-6 instruction, and observed demonstration lessons with real students. The teachers worked together to plan lessons and activities in classrooms and computer labs, finding ways to help students at all ability levels increase their motivation, confidence, and achievement. Every day, after the students left, the teachers met to discuss what they read, what they observed, and what they learned.
By studying Katie Wood Ray's text In Pictures and in Words, teachers learned how exploring illustrations can help children deepen thinking, organize their thoughts, and develop their written voices. They analyzed instructional content and discussed how lessons that integrate art and writing can help children meet California's Common Core State Standards. They found new ways to use the visual and performing arts as a springboard to build social interactions, engage critical thinking, and jump-start learning.
Together, teachers discovered effective ways to meet the unique needs of each student at the workshop. In August, they will bring new ideas back to their classrooms to recreate the excitement and productivity with their own students.
